Police bust budget-hotel prostitution ring
Shanghai police said today they have detained 33 suspects for running prostitution in the city's budget hotels.
Police in Pudong District said they received reports that ad flyers were often slipped under the door into hotel rooms, "printed with obscene contents and phone numbers."
Police detectives soon found a group of 10 people traveling in a black van to distribute the flyers and a much larger criminal ring emerged as the investigation deepened. These people worked like a team with leaders, distributers, phone operators and drivers.
The officers had difficulty capturing the suspects because sex deals were all done in hotels picked randomly during phone calls.
Once a client called, they would ask him to give the hotel name and room number and call back to confirm the information. Prostitutes would be sent to the hotel by a car and escorted to the room by gang members who would then wait in the hotel lobby.
After two months of investigation, police carried out a raid on Sunday night and caught 22 ring members and 11 prostitutes. They had five hideouts across the city, police said.
Since September, Shanghai police have busted four gangs that run organized prostitution in budget hotels and have detained 62 suspects.
