Police catch 3 suspects in cable theft case

Police have captured three people suspected of stealing telecom cables, Shanghai officers said this morning.

More than 60 kilograms of telecom cables, worth more than 20,000 yuan (US$3,213), had been stolen by the suspects since December in Baoshan District, police said.

They sold the cables to a recycling station for about 2,400 yuan, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said.

Baoshan police started to investigate the case after several cable thefts were reported in Luojing area.

The police found the thefts usually occurred before dawn and ambushed the suspects in the early morning of January 14. Around 4am, two of the suspects, one surnamed Wang and the other surnamed Chen, showed up and tried to steal cables in front of a house in Luojing Town, police said. Wang was caught at the scene and Chen was captured minutes later while trying to flee.

According to police officers, the two confessed to stealing more than 60 kilograms of cables and selling them to a recycling station, owned by the third suspect surnamed Huang, for 40 yuan per kilogram.
