A MAN was caught yesterday, three days after he attacked a Shanghai resident with a hammer and robbed him of 50,000 yuan (US$7,595) in Putuo District, city police said.
The suspect surnamed Yao was nabbed in Jiangsu Province, police said yesterday.
Officers said the 21-year-old suspect told them he wanted to get some money before going home for the Spring Festival.
The victim, Geng Jianxin, suffered head and rib injuries after he was attacked and robbed about 3pm on Tuesday. Geng is now in stable condition in hospital.
According to police, Yao followed Geng, who had just left a nearby bank, to a residential community on Taopu Road.
He was attacked with the hammer just as he was about to enter the complex, police said. The suspect grabbed Geng's bag, which contained the money, and fled.
