Police helicopters to keep eye on long-distance coaches
Helicopters are being deployed to monitor inter-province coaches during the Spring Festival travel peak that began this week, Shanghai police said yesterday.
This is intended to discourage dangerous and illegal practices by coach drivers, said police.
These include stopping at unauthorized areas and allowing additional passengers to illegally get onto vehicles during a journey, which can lead to overcrowding.
Police helicopters will patrol over highways linking Shanghai to neighboring cities, such as Hangzhou and Ningbo in Zhejiang Province, as well as expressways linking downtown to suburban districts Qingpu and Jiading.
Coaches found to be committing violations will be reported to a road traffic law enforcement team.
About 5.5 million people are expected to travel by long distance coach from Shanghai during the 40-day Spring Festival travel season.
