Police help migrant worker recover lost cash

A migrant worker recovered the 110,000 yuan (US$16,716) of cash he left on a Shanghai taxi 10 hours earlier thanks to the help of police.

The man surnamed Chen called a taxi at 8:40am on Tuesday and took his wife, son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons to a long-distance bus station. As the car was so crowded, Chen put his bag containing 110,000 yuan in cash in the space between the back seat and the windshield but forgot to take the bag when they got off, police said.

When Chen realized the loss, the taxi had already gone and none of the family had paid attention to the color or plate number of the taxi nor did Chen ask for a receipt, Pudong police said.

After getting the call, officers at the Zhoujiadu police station looked up video recordings of surveillance cameras around the bus station. After hours of searching, the taxi was identified and contacted in the afternoon. The officers said the driver just noticed the bag and was also worried after finding so much money in it.

The money was returned to Chen at 7pm. Police reminded migrant workers to take care of their belongings while going home for the Chinese New Year.
