Police hunt assailants for stabbing an urban management officer

POLICE are waging in a manhunt for assailants who stabbed an urban management officer on Sunday night in downtown Shanghai in an act of revenge for closing their food stand business days before.

The stabbed officer surnamed Li was injured in his left thigh but was in stable condition in hospital, police said. The attack happened around 10:30pm on Sunday when Li and a colleague were patrolling the intersection of Xinhui Road and Changde Road in Putuo District. Four to five men armed with knives attacked Li and then fled, his colleague said. Li was sent to a nearby hospital immediately.

"I know one of them by his appearance," Li said, adding that man used to sell snacks in one corner of the intersection at night. Li said he punished him two days for running the illegal business. City police are investigating the incident. It was not the first attack by vendors on Shanghai law enforcement personnel. Early last year an officer was stabbed to death by a street dealer selling purses.
