Police hunting for elusive gang members

LOCAL police said yesterday that they are still hunting for two suspects of a four-member gang after unwittingly foiling a likely gang fight last Friday. The gangsters were carrying long knives, masks, gloves and other tools when their vehicle was stopped for a check in suburban Minhang District.

One of the four suspects surnamed Tang drowned and died that night after fleeing from police by jumping into a river and another surnamed Zhan was caught early Saturday morning.

"They were planning a gang fight in Minhang that night but were intercepted by our patrolling officers during a regular check of their vehicle," Li Ming, a media officer of the Songjiang police told Shanghai Daily yesterday. "Our officers were checking a black car when the four men suddenly rushed out of the vehicle."

The incident occurred about 8pm on the intersection of Zhuanxin Highway and Zhangjing Road in Dongjing Town of the district, police said.

"We were suspicious about the black BYD car because its license plates were shaded and asked the car to stop for a check," Li said.

While some officers chased the gang members, the driver, surnamed Lin, was caught and weapons like two long hacking knives and three kitchen knives were found in the car.

Three of the suspects jumped into the Xiguanjing Creek while Zhan opted for another escape route.

Tang was later found drowned in the river at 9:42pm on Friday and Zhan was detained the next day.

The driver Lin was later released.
