Police inform residents of alternative parking choices
ILLEGAL parking near Shanghai Children’s Medical Center and Renji Hospital in Pudong has long been a headache to the police and residents alike, but now a new effort is tried to address the problem.
This morning, Pudong police and volunteers distributed leaflets around the two adjacent hospitals in Tangqiao area which advise motorists to park their cars in three paid parking lots along nearby streets.
The two hospitals are surrounded by Pujian Road to the north, Dongfang Road to the east, Beiyuan Road to the south and Linyi Road N. to the west.
Vehicles waiting to enter Renji Hospital often block the entire bus-only lane on Dongfang Road, while the 59 parking slots on both sides of the smaller Beiyuan Road which has three entrances to the Children’s Medical Center are always occupied.
As a result, many motorists illegally park on Linyi Road N. which bans parking.
Ding Hongqi, a public relations officer from Pudong traffic police, told Shanghai Daily that many illegal parkers are not aware of the existence of other parking choices near the hospitals.
Not far from the hospitals, there are two street parking lots with 105 slots at the other end of Beiyuan Road and Huanlong Road between Beiyuan Road and Longyang Road, and they’re usually just 60 percent occupied.
Apart from the two spots, police found the parking lot of the Walmart supermarket on Linyi Road N. also a neglected parking choice.
“In scorching summer days like this, parking in an indoor parking lot is a good choice for cars too,” Ding said.
Meanwhile, Jin Hongfang, a traffic police officer working in this area, said the police will keep cracking down on illegal parking and advised people to take taxis to the hospitals instead of driving their own cars.
