Police install markers to help tourists in distress
ABOUT 4,000 position markers will be installed across Shanghai for people to identify their location while calling the police.
The markers or signs will cover the Expo site and all Metro stations in Shanghai by the end of this year, according to Shanghai Public Security Bureau today.
"There is a unique number on each position sign," police officer Wu Yi told Shanghai Daily. "Our operator can guide callers to find the nearest sign and we can use our GPS system to identify their position."
The bureau said tourists may not know their location if they dialed the emergency number 110, so the signs would help them.
Wu also said the police had a volunteer team of English-speaking officers to answer foreigners' calls.
Shanghai now has 16,721 police position markers covering expressways, airports, parks, green areas and traffic hubs, the police said.
