Police rescue woman from knifeman

A WOMAN was rescued unharmed after a knifeman took her hostage in a hair salon in Shanghai's Hongkou District, witnesses said today.

The suspect, an unidentified migrant worker, was said to be homeless and often haunted the salon, witnesses said.

Police made no comment and the case was still under investigation.

The doors remained shut today at Jiali Barber's Shop on Gongping Road near Tangshan Road in Hongkou District, where the hostage-taking happened.

Screams were heard inside the shop about 3am while most residents were asleep and police cars soon surrounded the area, witnesses said.

The suspect, in his 20s, was seen threatening a girl with a knife held to her neck. Police talked to the kidnapper for about an hour, witnesses said, before rushing into the shop at 5am, saving the victim and taking a suspect into custody.

Witnesses said the suspect had drunk alcohol and his motivation was unclear.

The suspect would be taken for a psychiatric check, according to Shanghai television news.
