Police seek clues to 6-year-old girl's murder

A six-year-old girl was found murdered in a river in the city's suburban Jiading District, police said this morning.

The girl, her identity still unconfirmed, was strangled to death and dumped into Yantie Creek in Waigang Town, according to initial investigation by police.

Her body was spotted in the water last Wednesday and she had been dead for one or two days, police said.

"Our top priority now is to find out the girl's identity so that crime detection can unfold," an officer, Xu Bo, told Shanghai Daily.

"We hope there are witnesses who would contact us to provide clues," Xu said.

Jiading police updated their official microblog on weibo.com this morning, seeking public help.

The victim was 120cm tall with a birthmark below her left knee, police said. Bruises were found around her eyes.
