Police swoop on baby traffickers
SHANGHAI railway police have cracked a major ring of traffickers in babies and in the process rescued 21 infants.
Since May, railway police seized 47 traffickers as well as freeing the 21 victims, officers said yesterday.
While some babies have been reunited with their families, others still have had no contact from their parents, according to officers.
The operation began with a routine patrol on a train from southwest China's Yunnan Province to Jiangsu Province's Nanjing on May 23.
On that occasion, three members of the gang were caught carrying two babies, and the Shanghai Railway Public Security Bureau was alerted.
A task force was immediately set up, and officers were sent to Jiangsu, Yunnan and Shandong Province.
Another 26 suspects were nabbed and seven more babies rescued by July.
More recently, officers caught the last 18 suspects and freed 12 babies.
The case encompassed at least five provinces and more than 40 officers joined the campaign, officials said.
Recent baby abductions nationwide have led the Ministry of Public Security to set up a Web page at www.mps.gov.cn to help reunite infants with their parents.
This site contains information on 60 snatched babies, including their pictures, approximate ages, time of abductions, present locations and other contact details. Only four of them have been reunited with their parents.
The ministry has set up a databank to store personal information including the DNA of all the rescued infants.
Authorities have urged parents of missing children to get blood tests at their local public security bureaus so they can perform match tests.
Police rescued 2,008 kidnapped children after solving 1,717 cases in a nationwide campaign against child trafficking that started on April 9, the People's Daily said.
