Political advisors close session as Yao elected into committee

RETIRED basketball star Yao Ming was elected as a new member of the standing committee of Shanghai's top advisory body as its annual session ended today.

Wu Zhiming, chairman of the city's politics and law committee, was elected as a vice chairman of Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng said at the closing event he expected the local CPPCC to continue to offer advice to the government in 2012.

Delegates submitted 902 proposals during the gathering, according to Feng Guoqin, chairman of the local committee of CPPCC.

The mechanism of the local committee of the CPPCC was set up in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. The session is usually held at the start of every year to supervise and advise on the government's work plan.

Meanwhile, the annual session of the Shanghai People's Congress will close tomorrow. Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng will hold a press conference tomorrow afternoon.
