Poll: Shanghai most cosmopolitan city in nation

SHANGHAI is regarded as the most international place in the nation, followed by Beijing, Hong Kong and Macau, according to a recent national survey about the image projected by different parts of China.

Some 62.2 percent of more than 6,000 people surveyed thought Shanghai is the nation’s best representative of international style, and 38.6 percent said they would describe Shanghai first when talking about modern China to expats.

As a key economic hub, Shanghai is heavily favored by young people, the survey showed.

Nearly 20 percent thought Shanghai is the best place to start a business. When choosing business partners, about nine out of 100 people said they would work with Shanghai natives.

Meanwhile, 17.4 percent hoped their children would attend Shanghai universities. The survey also asked people to choose a famous figure to represent their hometown.

Former NBA star Yao Ming was picked as the representative for Shanghai. He is the only sports star on the list. Others picked to represent hometowns were ancient emperors, political leaders, reputable sages and celebrities such as TV hosts and singers.

The survey was jointly conducted by Xinhua Net and HorizonKey, China’s independent research organization, between October 24 and November 3.
