Power boasts tunnel precision

IT'S all systems go for the central cable tunnel system to supply power for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo as construction of the second section near the Bund was completed yesterday.

The Xizang Road Cable Tunnel, stretching nearly 5 kilometers under the Bund area, is now connected to the section that runs across the Huangpu River to connect Expo zones on both banks, project operator Shanghai Urban Construction Group said yesterday.

"The Expo cable tunnel is completed with improved anti-fire designs to reduce possibilities of blackouts inside the exhibition zones," said Chen Ye, a company official.

The tunnel will be joined by more cables to benefit households on both sides of the river after the Expo.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Hutchison Whitecat Co will provide cleaning products and services for toilets, restaurants and public areas at the Expo site.

And online registration facilities will be launched in November for domestic and overseas reporters wishing to cover the Expo.
