Program to help less-fortunate kids
YOUNG people including expatriates are being called on to participate in a three-year social work program to team up with underprivileged children.
The first group of 1,000 volunteers, mostly young office workers, will accompany 1,000 children, including migrant workers' kids or those from local poor families, in pairs to visit the World Expo beginning this weekend.
The program was launched and funded by the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese Youth League. Participants don't need to pay for the tickets or the cost of future activities, officials said.
"The program can guarantee underprivileged children get direct help from volunteers, who they are teamed up with, in their daily life," said Wang Feng, a youth league official.
The league will launch other activities such as museum tours, movie watching and language training to help underprivileged children broaden their minds.
