Prosecutors act on child molestation
Prosecutors in Qingpu District handled 80 criminal cases over the past three years where minors were the victims.
Nearly 60 percent of them were related to sexual assaults, according to a white paper released by Qingpu District People’s Procuratorate yesterday. The cases mainly involved rape, molestation and prostitution.
The procuratorate has intervened early in 29 cases involving 32 minors since 2016, when it set up a one-stop evidence-collecting center with Qingpu police to prevent further assaults while testimonies were being taken. Prosecutors also provided psychological guidance to 52 minors.
In one case, a man was sentenced to 11 years in jail for abducting children, rape and molestation by Qingpu District People’s Court earlier this year.
The man, surnamed Li, collected information about lost, abandoned and street children across the country from a news app.
Between 2017 and 2018, he pretended to be the father of four disabled children at rescue centers and took them home. One of the children was raped several times.
He also adopted a boy from his parents and molested him.
