Pudong catering center to feed hungry workers

A NEW catering center is being built on Changyi Road in Pudong New Area to offer more lunch choices for office workers in the Lujiazui area.

It will specialize in lunch box deliveries and work should be completed in the second half of this year, Pudong officials said yesterday.

More than 150,000 people work in about 150 office buildings in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone and they have complained about the difficulty of finding reasonably priced lunch spots in the area.

Many office buildings don't have canteens and eating at local restaurants is expensive because of the high rents charged in the area.

"I take a taxi to Super Brand Mall from time to time with my colleagues," said Zhu Ling, a department manager at China Construction Bank's Pudong branch. "It's very expensive and not a long-term solution."

Government officials have been aware of the problem and it was discussed at the annual sessions of the Pudong New Area People's Congress and Pudong's political advisory body last month.

Providing cheap, good-quality meals for white-collar workers has become a priority, said Lujiazui officials.

The Lujiazui community began to send meal boxes to elderly people living alone in 2006 and the experience from this will be applied to the new services for office workers.
