Pudong ex-official on trial for bribery

A FORMER head of Pudong's agricultural development authority is on trial in Shanghai for taking 2.45 million yuan (US$358,853) in bribes and abuse of power that lost the state 50 million yuan.

Zhu Rongchang, 63, former deputy director of Pudong Agricultural Development Bureau, faced trial yesterday at Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The court heard that Sun didn't make an accurate evaluation of land plots nor applied for superior approval before selling them. The land sales caused a loss of 50 million yuan for the state, the report said.

For example, a 1,200-mu (80 hectare) plot was sold as 1,100 mu at 80,000 yuan a mu, a price he set after referring to the average prices of nearby lots, the court heard.

Sun was also charged with taking 2 million yuan in bribes with others and another 450,000 yuan on his own account.
