Qingpu to continue community courses after farmers learn to boost incomes

QINGPU District will continue to promote community education in rural villages after seeing success in Baihe Town, where farmers' incomes have increased rapidly after learning new strawberry planting technologies.

The Qingpu District Education Bureau has compiled many community courses for local farmers as well as migrants to learn new skills and improve their incomes, intending to retain farm workers after many left the field for the city center.

Lu  Xuejuan, 52, said the income produced by her strawberry field increased from 3,000 yuan to 30,000 yuan in the past 10 years after learning new skills, which increased the yield and made the strawberry the bestselling fruit in winter.

Farmers from Liantang Town in the district learned how to use recycled vegetable leaves to make handcrafts which were sold to Japan.

Farmers in the Zhujiajiao Town are learning how to plant lavender, which has become a popular plant for its appearance and fragrance.
