Railway police catch man with 700g of 'ice'
SHANGHAI railway police said yesterday that they have thwarted the city's biggest drug trafficking case on trains so far this year.
A man surnamed Zhang was detained for carrying 700 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or "ice," when traveling by rail from Sichuan Province to Shanghai, police said.
Zhang, 36, was seized on Sunday morning after his train arrived at Shanghai Railway Station.
"He acted very calm at that time," said Gan Guangyu, a police officer who stopped Zhang at the station.
Gan found the ice in Zhang's backpack. It was packed in several bags labeled "sugar," police said.
Zhang, a local drug addict, traveled to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, to see his girlfriend. He bought about 0.26 grams of heroin for his own use on July 17, police said.
While purchasing the heroin, a man approached Zhang and asked him to take the ice to Shanghai.
He told police he could earn 5,000 yuan (US$738) for transporting the drug.
Zhang, a long-time addict, was previously sent to jail for housing other addicts and he has also been sent to rehabilitation centers several times, police said.
Drug trafficking on trains is on the rise and police have cracked 45 such cases since April. They seized a total of 900 grams of drugs from those cases.
"The amount they carried was relatively small, mostly for their own use," officers said.
Last month, local railway police nabbed two addicts who were carrying illicit drugs while with a tour group that came to the city to visit the World Expo.
