Rape, attempted murder duo out to 'win respect'
HONG Kong gangster movies influenced two young men who allegedly tried to kill a woman after raping and robbing her, according to prosecutors.
Jiading District prosecutors said that the pair have been arrested. The alleged attack took place just four days after the men were released from a juvenile reformatory.
The duo told prosecutors that they hoped to "achieve a big event" and "build prestige among brothers" by committing crimes. Influenced by Hong Kong movies about gangsters, they believed they could win "respect" through assaults and murder.
Jiang Xiaoliang and Wu Jiancheng, both 22, met in a juvenile reformatory. Jiang, a native of the city's Jiading District, swore to Wu, a Jiangsu Province native, that he would do "a big thing" after he was released and invited Wu, a former soldier, to join him.
Jiang planned that they would rob and murder an old man who he knew was rich.
Wu was released on July 17 last year, and Jiang a day later. To get money to buy "equipment" to rob and kill the old man, they decided to rob a lone passer-by on a remote road, prosecutors said.
On the night of July 22 last year, a woman surnamed Qu was riding her bicycle when the two men, armed with knives, allegedly stopped and dragged her into nearby woodland. The duo then raped and stabbed Qu, prosecutors said.
Believing Qu to be dead, the men took her watch and left to look for a bag and stones so that they could dump her body in a river, prosecutors said.
While they were gone, Qu, who had been playing dead, struggled out of the wood and raised the alarm.
When the men returned, they were astonished to find Qu missing, and fled.
Qu received hospital treatment and survived.
The suspects were caught in an Internet cafe two days later and confessed to police, said prosecutors.
