Rapist gets 12 years in jail

A SHANGHAI man who sneaked into unlocked apartments and raped three women in 2004 and last year was sentenced to 12 years in prison, the Hongkou District People's Court said today.
Prosecutors said the 48-year-old convict, surnamed Sun, broke into an unlocked garret in an old Shikumen-style house one midnight in April, 2004. He sneaked to the bed where a woman was sleeping alone and threatened her with a knife to give him cash and possessions.
Sun also raped the woman and erased his fingerprints on the door with a kerchief, the court heard.
Prosecutors said the woman didn't lock the door because her boyfriend forgot to take the key with him. She had left the key on the door in case she fell asleep and couldn't hear the knock.
On July 6, 2004, Sun repeated his old tricks and raped a young woman in an old house on Baoding Road. The woman forgot the key in the door and her parents were sleeping only a few meters away while she was raped.
Prosecutors said Sun already had a criminal record for rape and robbery and had previously been sentenced for 14 years in prison in 1985. In 2005, Sun was put into jail again for two years for fraud. But his two rape crimes in 2004 were undiscovered then.
In May last year, Sun lost money in gambling and tried to steal money from a garret. He dropped the plan when he saw the resident was at home, and took away a bunch of keys hanging on the door.
About a week later, Sun went back to the garret, stole money and raped the resident's girlfriend who was then sleeping alone in the room.
Police tracked down Sun by linking the semen he left in the third victim's room with his DNA record in the prisoners' database.
Although Sun also robbed money from the three victims, he was only charged with rape as there was inadequate evidence to accuse him of robbery, prosecutors said.
