Real estate agent accused of illicit entry
POLICE said yesterday that they are probing a break-in case where real estate agents unlocked a household to show a customer an apartment in Putuo District last Friday.
Police said the agent and a worker who helped unlock the door have been questioned. The incident raised safety concerns among the residents.
Last Friday, the apartment owner, surnamed Wang, received a call from an acquaintance who reported the break-in. Wang soon rushed back only to find no one was there.
Upon the arrival of police officers, they found via surveillance tapes that three men first reached the apartment and later brought another man with tools.
Police soon located the three men who were identified as nearby real estate agency staff.
The man with the tools had a repair stall near Wang's residence, police said.
According to the police investigation, the staff said they were eager to nail down a deal with the customer who was shown the apartment.
The staff told police they had found Wang's apartment information online but were rejected on the phone by the owner, who said he had no intention of selling the apartment.
Wang said the apartment was listed online about a year ago and soon rented to a friend.
