Rebirth of a nation

RWANDA celebrates its national pavilion day today and the National Ballet of Rwanda will present song and dance show "Urukerereza" at the Expo Center tonight.

The show is a ballet that gathers artists from different districts and regions of Rwanda for the purpose of promoting, conserving and preserving the country's culture through songs, drumming, dance and drama.

The show starts by artists demonstrating their joy to the public; they are overjoyed for their peaceful and prosperous life.

In Rwandan culture, talking drums carried the message of the king to the people. During the colonial period drums were also used in schools to signal their opening and special occasions.

"Urukerereza" was created in 1974 and the troupe has the highest level of performance in traditional dances, songs and drums from throughout the African nation.

With its theme, "Kigali City: Heart of Rwanda's Economic Prosperity of the Nation Reborn," the nation's pavilion exhibits its achievements over the past 15 years.

At the same time, the pavilion highlights the features of Kigali that differentiate it from other African cities and its important position as the capital.

There are three traditional kiosks in the center of the pavilion for visitors to rest amid beautiful scenes of the capital. Specialties such as tea, coffee and handicrafts will also be on display.
