Rescuers spot missing backpacker
RESCUERS today found a Shanghai backpacker who broke his leg and lost contact with others on a mountain in southwestern Yunnan Province after a two-day search.
They spotted Ren Shengjie waving his clothes at them from a valley about 7am. They are now trying to reach him in valley, about 3,600 meters above sea level.
His parents were happy this morning after fearing for his life last night, realizing he had not taken much food and the nights were cold.
"Rescue workers have to chop down trees to make a path to get him," said Ren's father, who had rushed to Yunnnan from Shanghai after the incident.
Ren, 25, was a graduate of Shanghai International Studies University and is now a teacher, according to his father.
Ren went to Yunnan with a student surnamed Luo and hiked up Cangshan Mountain in Dali Prefecture alone on Tuesday morning.
Luo, waiting at the foot of the mountain, received a text message from him that evening saying he suffered leg fractures after a terrible fall.
They called Dali police who immediately sent rescuers to the area. Several tourists were among the 460 people on the search.
However, the mountain's dense forest impeded rescue. Ren turned off his mobile phone to save power from time to time.
His anxious parents reached Dali yesterday morning and are very worried about him.
