Residents fear buildings will collapse

RESIDENTS of two buildings in Changning District fear they may collapse after nearby construction have caused them to sink at least 8 centimeters and sparking frequent tremors, a Website reported today.

One fifth-floor senior resident surnamed Xu carries a bag packed with her ID card, bank cards and other belongings at all times just in case the building collapses, according to the Xinmin.com report.

"I've often felt the house shaking at night in the past six months," Xu said. "Whenever that happens, I take my bag and dog and rush downstairs immediately." Nearly all the residents have reported shaking in the two buildings on Jiangsu Road.

Cracks can be found in the concrete floors, windows and doors. All the iron bars on ground-floor doors and windows have twisted. And many residents complain they can't lock their doors and windows because the frames are so twisted.

The construction company operating the nearby site checked the buildings yesterday and said they would wait for the result. Residents said they would use the law to protect themselves if necessary.
