Residents help stop robbery
A MASKED man with a hammer who tried to rob a jewelry store in Songjiang District was caught with the help of security guards and residents, Shanghai police said yesterday.
The man, not identified, has been detained for attempted robbery, police said.
Three security guards and one passer-by who helped subdue the man will each be given 2,000 yuan (US$302) as a reward, police said.
The incident occurred at about 8pm on Tuesday in a jewelry store along Jiuxin Highway and was recorded by a surveillance camera.
The man, wearing a hoodie and mask, entered the store, walked straight to the counter and started to smash it with a hammer, according to the video clip.
Security guards and several customers rushed over to stop the man, who fled before he could steal anything.
The security guards, shop assistants and customers pursued the man. "The security guards rushed out immediately, we followed and later some residents helped catch the man," said jewelry store employee Shen Wenzhi.
During the pursuit, many people helped and the man was caught by police, security guards and a civilian.
The case was still being investigated yesterday.
