A PREGNANT mentally retarded girl had an abortion yesterday after she was allegedly raped by a neighbor.
Relatives told Shanghai Daily late last night that police would conduct tests to determine who was the father.
A male neighbor in his forties has been detained for raping the 13-year-old girl.
The girl came to Shanghai from Anhui Province with her parents who ran a grocery in Minhang District's Pujiang Town.
On June 9, she complained about feeling uncomfortable and her parents took her to a hospital where an examination showed she was four months' pregnant.
The shocked parents told the police who later detained one of their neighbors after the girl said he had had sex with her.
The man, who runs a motorcycle taxi business, knew the girl's family as he often visited their shop. He has a son who is a university student.
"We were shocked," said a family friend surnamed Zhang. "It's lucky it wasn't too late for her to have an abortion."
A man who has sex with a girl under the age of 14 is guilty of rape if he is aware of the girl's age, said lawyer Lian Yanjie of the Xinhua Law Firm. In this case, the man also knew the girl was retarded and should be severely punished, the lawyer said.
