Rhone-Alpes shines lights on best practices
A LIGHTING show from the Rhone-Alpes Pavilion lit up the World Expo site last night as the French region officially opened its Urban Best Practices Area to visitors.
"Lights City," one of two displays by the pavilion, provides lighting for the public areas, exhibition halls' external walls and the Harmony Tower Chimney on the top of the Pavilion of the Future.
The display is both ornamental and energy-saving, adopting a lighting design full of festive features, including fireflies dancing around visitors.
It shows the progress in recent years of advanced technology-saving energy in lighting systems.
There are four light shows every night, scheduled from 19:40 to 21:50.
Jean-Jack Queyranne, regional president of the Rhone-Alpes, said at the opening ceremony the region's UBPA case was a new start in the cooperation between Shanghai and the region.
"The Expo makes Shanghai's relations with the world closer," he said.
Mayor Han Zheng, who participated in the opening ceremony, signed the city's new cooperation memorandum for 2010-2014 with the Rhone-Alpes Region on Friday. The two became sister cities in 2008.
The Rhone-Alpes pavilion - inspired by a structure in the region's city of Valence which is renowned for its quality of work and life balance - showcases economic innovation and a sustainable environment.
The pavilion was built with inventively recycled construction materials to keep energy consumption and costs to a minimum.
A rose garden in front of the pavilion features plants from ancient to modern times widely sourced from places between Lyon and China.
In addition, a planted rooftop area functions to purify the air and regulate temperatures during the summer. Visitors can access clean and pure water at the pavilion as its tap water is drinkable.
The Rhone-Alpes region is France's second-largest.
