River sludge cleaned up at market
RIVER sludge in a food wholesale market was cleaned up today in Shanghai's Baoshan District, one day after a wave of river silt flooded the market and damaged a large amount of goods, officials said.
Shanghai Qixiang Construction Co Ltd has registered about 40 shop owners for compensation. Their products were soaked in silt and could no longer be sold, said a Baoshan District government official surnamed Chen.
"This week was supposed to be the best time for wholesale businesses as the Spring Festival is approaching," a market vendor surnamed Li said. "Now it's all over. All the food was soaked in putrid silt. Who will buy this?"
Each shop owner lost about 10,000 yuan (US$1,462), according to Li, as more than 1,000 cubic meters of silt, the waste from a river dredging operation, flooded the market in Dachang Town.
About 10,000 cubic meters of silt was being stored behind a wall at a former marble factory, which is about half the size a soccer field, said Wang Jinfu with Shanghai Qixiang Construction Co Ltd. The company planned to transport the silt after it dried.
The wall collapsed, causing the sludge to flood the market.
Wang said the company will compensate those who suffered damage from the spill.
