Robber steals gold bar ... and 5 fake ones

POLICE are hunting a robber who grabbed a gold bar from a store in suburban Jinshan District.

The shop said the suspect, who was wearing sunglasses and brandishing what looked like a gun, took six bars. However, five were fakes used as samples.

The genuine bar is valued at around 20,000 yuan (US$ 3,125), according to the store, which is located on the second floor of a supermarket.

Police were alerted shortly after 8pm on Saturday night after the man fled from the gold counter.

Witnesses said he threatened staff with what appeared to be a gun and smashed the counter glass with a hammer.

The robber stuffed the bars into a bag before fleeing.

Police said the gun-shaped item was an iron tube that was discarded by the suspect.

Management said fake gold bars are used in displays due to concerns about theft.
