Rod exhibits go on sale at auction
THE United Kingdom Pavilion at the World Expo is to remove 60,680 transparent acrylic rods containing plant seeds and sell nearly two-thirds of them at auction on Taobao.com on Thursday.
The details and prices will be announced on the day - during an earlier charity auction event, a rod from the pavilion sold for 20,000 yuan (US$ 3,003). The pavilion will donate the proceeds from the auction to Cerecare center in Shanghai, a charity organization focusing on children's health and safety issues.
"Many have offered to purchase the UK Pavilion, but we can't just sell it like that. The pavilion has incredible value on protecting biodiversity and sustainable development, so we hope to make use of it as much as possible, not only during, but also after the Expo," Carma Elliot OBE, HM consul-general of the British Consulate-General in Shanghai, told Shanghai Daily.
The pavilion will also donate 1,000 rods to schools across China, as its officials promised in the summer.
Some rods will be kept in the official Expo Museum, accompanied by other parts of the "Seed Cathedral," such as pictures, models, and plants to tell the story of the exhibit.
