SSO gains artistic advisor


MEMBERS of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra have gained a new artistic consultant - Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit, known for his interpretations of French and Russian 20th century music.

The appointment and details of the coming season were announced by SSO's chief music supervisor Yu Long yesterday.


SSO, the oldest and best-known orchestra in Asia, will unveil its new lineup of 103 artists in the 2009-2010 concert season. The 103 were selected from 600 candidates in a five-month recruitment drive. SSO will also host 10 guest artists from around the world, according to Yu.

The opening concert of the season on September 26 will be presented by Yu and soloist Wang Jian with works by Dvorak and Tchaikovsky.

On September 27 the orchestra celebrates its 130th anniversary with a gala concert featuring renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang and Chinese vocalists Liao Changyong, Zhang Jianyi and Shen Yang.
