SUV driver's parking lot rampage
FOUR people were injured and one remains in a coma after a driver accelerated too quickly in a downtown parking lot yesterday, mowing down the victims and crashing into four other vehicles "like a raging bull."
The accident occurred on Tianyaoqiao Road in downtown Xuhui District at 1:30pm when the driver, 50, surnamed Ren mishandled her SUV by starting out at high speed.
The driver, stunned and scared after knocking down four people walking in the parking lot, put her vehicle into reverse, only to crash into several cars parked in the lot, police said. Two of the victims were male security guards of the parking lot, and the other two were a man and a woman who were pedestrians, witnesses said.
Witness Lancer Chee told Shanghai Daily that he saw two victims lying on the ground near the SUV's wheels, with blood on their bodies. He said one victim suffered incontinence and was sent to a nearby hospital.
"It was lunch time when the accident happened. There were many people on the streets, walking across the parking lot as it is a shortcut for them to shuttle between offices and restaurants," said Chee.
Chee said an upset man in the crowd that gathered around kept crying and telling residents and policemen in a loud voice that "the SUV was running so fast, knocking down the pedestrians as if it was a scene from a Hollywood movie."
"I thought the woman might step on the gas when she tried to stop or reverse her car," said a witness surnamed Yu. "She probably lost control of her car as she drove it like a raging bull."
Yu said the woman stayed in the car until the police showed up.
"When she got out, she was wearing a face like she was completely shocked by the accident," said Chee.
Police are investigating.
