Sacked Jing'an District mayor reinstated in Xinjiang

THE former Jing'an District mayor, sacked over a deadly high-rise fire in downtown Shanghai that killed 58 people and injured 71 others in November 2010, was given a new job in northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Zhang Renliang was removed from his post last September but he resurfaced recently in Kashi Prefecture as the deputy Party secretary of Kashi, according to the local news website, xjksxw.com.

The transfer of a disgraced government official has sparked an outcry among Chinese netizens.

Zhang was among the 28 government officials and company employees who were punished in connection with the worst fire in Shanghai's recent history. Another 26 people received jail terms.

Two unlicensed welders were blamed for causing the fire that spread rapidly along the scaffolding and soon engulfed the whole residential high-rise on Changde Road in downtown Jing'an District.
