Second-child applications in line with expectations
SHANGHAI approved 16,639 second-child applications last year, the city’s health authority said today.
Shanghai adopted a new family planning policy on March 1 last year allowing families to have a second child if either spouse is an only child.
The Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said the applications were in line with expectations. It estimated about 20,000 applications will be approved annually in each of the next three to five years.
Couples who applied for a second child tend to be well educated, the commission said. Among the applicants, over half had at least a bachelor’s degree.
Officials also said 86.9 percent of the couples were in their first marriage.
The average age interval between their first and second child was 5.5 year, according to the commission.
