Security checks upgraded at Shanghai airports

SECURITY inspections at two local airports will be upgraded to a level applied during the Beijing Olympics last year amid a nationwide crackdown before the National Day holiday from October 1 to 8.

Checks have already been beefed up at airports in other cities including Beijing and Chengdu, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported, citing the East China branch of Civil Aviation Administration of China.

The newspaper didn't specify when the new security checks will apply and how long they will last.

Passengers will be banned from carrying liquids or inflammable substances aboard planes and will be allowed to carry only one piece of cabin luggage, the authority said.

They will be asked to remove shoes, submit to body inspections and may have to open their luggage.

Officials advised passengers to arrive at airports earlier than normal because the security checks may take time.
