'Sexy young wife' a 40-year-old man

AN unemployed man who pretended to be a tycoon's attractive young wife seeking men to father a child has been arrested for allegedly swindling 100,000 yuan (US$ 15,401) out of would-be romeos.

The 40-year-old suspect, surnamed Tu, is said to have used voice-changing software to make him sound like a sexy young woman when "interviewing" candidates enticed by the offer of 1 million yuan for their services.

Songjiang District police said earlier this week that they tracked down Tu after victims got in touch.

Tu is alleged to have found his victims by pasting hundreds of posters on electricity poles featuring a picture of a busty, scantily-clad young woman. The accompanying text explained she was married to an infertile tycoon and wanted to hire a "suitable" man and have sex with him to produce an heir.

She promised to pay 1 million yuan for the service. If she was impressed with the applicant after talking on the telephone, she would immediately pay 300,000 yuan into his bank account.

Most passersby dismissed the "tycoon's wife" offer as a joke or a prank. But nine men, including a middle-aged man surnamed Liu, telephoned the number on the poster, offering to father a child, police said.

Liu told police that he was poor but thought his luck had changed when he saw the poster last month.

He told police officers that when he first spoke to the "woman" on the phone her voice sounded unnatural but he wasn't suspicious.

After being asked for his personal details, Liu paid 500 yuan into the bank account of the "tycoon's wife."

He was told this was only to prove he was a genuine applicant and would be returned if he failed the screening.

Liu ended up forking out 23,000 yuan for services that included commissions to the "lawyer" helping them complete documents and contracts to legalize the deal. The cash was never returned.

The "lawyer," who also talked many times on the phone with the victim, was also Tu, according to police.

Liu gradually grew suspicious as his appointment to finally meet the tycoon's sexy young wife was repeatedly delayed.

He asked to terminate the deal and take back his cash, even paying a 2,200 yuan penalty for breaching the contract.

However, his money was never returned and, finally realizing he had been swindled, Liu alerted the police.
