Shanghai Museum gets aid for antique restoration

SHANGHAI Museum will get funding for the restoration and preservation of a 2,000-year-old bronze water vessel called Jian, the museum said today.
Jian was a popular utensil during China's Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 BC). It was used for storing water and ice, with an average thickness of only 1.5mm and 1mm at the thinnest.
Chen Kelun, deputy curator of Shanghai Museum, said the vessel's restoration has lasted 15 years and the work will be accelerated with financial support from the Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
He did not reveal the figure of the fund but said the money will be used to buy high-tech equipment to speed up the restoration process.
Jian was bought by Ma Chengyuan, the late curator of Shanghai Museum in Hong Kong in the early 1990s. Its restoration started in 1996.
Bank of America Merril Lynch is the first donor to support the restoration of a single art object in Shanghai Museum. The company also funded similar projects around the world.
