Shanghai approves amended 1-child policy

Shanghai’s legislature approved the city’s amended one-child policy this morning, which will take effect this Saturday.

Under the amendment, couples with either spouse from a one-child family with Shanghai residence document, or hukou, can have a second child, the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said.

Beijing, Tianjin and three provinces — Jiangxi, Anhui and Zhejiang — have already put the new policy, announced by the central government in November, into action.
