Shanghai authorities dismiss school terror attack rumor

A rumor about a possible terror attack on local students has been dismissed by the Shanghai Education Bureau.

The rumor, which spread via instant messaging tools last night, claimed education authorities had received a notice that terrorists led by the East Turkistan Islamic Movement were in the city ready to target the city's middle and primary school students. The authorities required all activities involving large gatherings of students to be canceled, the messages said, causing widespread concern among parents.

The education bureau issued a statement on its Weibo account just after midnight saying it had never received such a notice and had never issued such a requirement.
