Shanghai goes green

SHANGHAI is to build an environmentally friendly community in cooperation with France's Rhone-Alpes region, after the two sides signed a cooperation memorandum for 2010-2014.

Daniel Gouffe, president of the Enterprise Rhone-Alpes International, said yesterday that the two cities are planning to work on a series of environmentally friendly projects, of which the eco-friendly community is the biggest.

The Rhone-Alpes region, famous for its green buildings, is displaying an energy-saving building at the Urban Best Practices Area.

The inspiration was a building erected 10 years ago. It uses 50 percent less energy compared to ordinary buildings, said Marie Helene Riamon, a region official.

Zeng Ming, a Shanghai Urban Construction and Communications Commission official, said the city is now involved in 42 environmentally friendly building projects.
