Shanghai has half of nation's cord blood samples

SHANGHAI Cord Blood Bank has collected more than 20,000 umbilical cord blood samples for matching with patients since it was founded eight years ago and its collection represents half of the nation's total.

The bank has provided samples to 406 patients so far and 131 of them found matching cord blood cells for transplant this year– the largest matching success quantity in the country.

To celebrate its eighth anniversary, the bank announced to donate eight units of umbilical cord blood to patients from needy families.

Currently, a patient needs to pay 20,000 yuan for a unit of umbilical cord blood to cover the cost on matching test and storage.

Like bone marrow, umbilical cord blood obtained during the delivery of a baby contains stem cells which can cure blood and immunity diseases. But stem cells from umbilical cord are less likely to be rejected thus have better curing effect.

Ruan Chenggeng, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said umbilical cord blood transplant now accounts for a quarter of stem cell transplants worldwide.
