Shanghai trails Beijing, Tokyo in knowledge competitiveness

TOKYO topped all the cities listed on this year's Asia-Pacific Knowledge Competitiveness Index issued today by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

It's followed by Osaka of Japan and Ulsan of South Korea, said the report, which evaluated each city on 20 aspects, such as talent pool and government spending on education.

Beijing ranked the 10th and is the only Chinese mainland city to join the top 10. Shanghai ranked the 11th place.

Shanghai lagged behind Beijing and many other cities in high-tech services and investment in research and development. Aging population is another factor that lowered its ranking.
