Shanghai woman drowned after car falls into river

A woman driver was drowned yesterday when she was backing her car that accidentally slipped into a river in the city's Baoshan District.

Local police said the woman, her identity not revealed, was backing a black Buick outside a Buddhist temple around 3pm yesterday. But the car jerked back, knocked off a parapet behind and fell into the Lianqi River. It floated on the surface for a few seconds before submerging into the four-meter-deep murky water.

Due to the river's depth and rapid flow, the car and the driver were not located and dredged up until 10:20pm. The woman was found dead, police said.

The woman was believed to have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake pedal. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
