Shanghai's Huaihai Road goes online
THE 110-year-old Huaihai Road will head to cyber space with the launch of a 3D e-commerce platform - "Online Huaihai Road" - at the end of next year.
Web surfers can have a 3D cyber tour on the street, which contains about 300 stores, and go shopping without leaving their home. People can make orders online for goods in a store, which will then deliver the purchases to their house.
Tourists can also visit the website, www.huaihairoad.cn, to get information about parking, catering and leisure facilities on the street before they go to the actual place.
The platform operator is now working to get stores on Huaihai Road to join the online project.
Stores do not need to pay for the online services for the first few years, the operator said yesterday.
"Merchants decide whether to sell their goods online at the same price as in the real store," said Han Wei, a staff member in charge of the platform's operations.
The new sales system should be encouraged and promoted in other shopping malls, said Fang Yuqing, a city government adviser. He said that the innovative cyber street can balance economic development with the protection of the historical buildings on the street and in other urban areas.
It can also help protect the environment by reducing carbon emissions, he added.
