Shanghai's role in the rebuilding

HUNDREDS of architecture and geology professionals from Shanghai's Tongji University, famous for its urban planning institute and engineering sciences, are helping to rebuild quake-devastated areas.

Six architecture experts from the university went to Sichuan on May 15 last year, while six urban-planning experts went to the province on May 18 to help with preparations for making temporary shelters and permanent reconstruction plans.

Tongji University was put in charge of reconstruction plans for 40 towns in four counties and cities, including Dujiangyan, which Shanghai was designated to help in the nationwide effort to aid reconstruction.

About 150 temporary shelters, which could accommodate 500,000 people, were erected on May 25.

Since then, hundreds of experts and volunteers have gone to the province to help reconstruction plans for schools, hospitals and public buildings.
