Shortage of passengers hits Expo bus routes
THE direct bus from Pudong International Airport to the Expo site has been cancelled - the No. 15 service had the lowest number of passengers of the 42 Expo bus routes.
Meanwhile, more stops will be added to the No. 33 Expo bus route from Jiadong Garden to Shangnan Road and the No. 36 Expo bus from Zhoupu Town to Shangnan Road from today instead of stopping at only one or two stations.
The two Expo bus lines will take the same route as the No. 614 bus and Zhounan Line bus and share stops on the route.
The Expo buses, between the site and transport hubs around the city, were designed to integrate into the existing transport network and alleviate congestion but suffered from a lack of passengers.
Authorities said at the start of the month that the buses were never more than 20 percent full.
And passenger numbers are still dropping.
Few passengers take the buses during the day except during the rush hour periods from 9am to 10am and 6pm to 7pm.
Services on the No. 1 Expo bus route have been cut from 121 during the Expo trial in April to 50.
The intervals on the No. 15 Expo route were extended from 15 minutes to an hour last week, but the route still carried so few passengers so the traffic authorities decide the cut it.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Ba-Shi Trolly Bus No. 3 Co Ltd has arranged for four shuttle buses to pick visitors up from Metro Line 4 Luban Road station to the Expo site's No. 1 gate free of charge and save them a 600-meter walk.
