Siren sound some hear still mystery
REPORTS of air-raid like sirens going off in the Pudong New Area about 10am yesterday sent authorities scrambling to check warning systems, but at the end of the day, civil defense authorities said they found nothing.
Officials said at first they suspected that warning equipment malfunctioned, but it turned out that the devices were all shut down and there were no breakdowns.
"Most citizens interviewed said they had not heard the siren-like sound, but still some said they did," said one civil defense official in Pudong. "So where are the sounds come from?"
The primary suspects were other sources such as ferry or vehicle sirens. Reports of sirens came from Pudong's Lujiazui, Huamu, Beicai, Sanlin and Hudong areas, people said.
Officials said they dispatched 12 teams to the places where the warning equipment is installed but found no malfunction.
They asked local residents not to panic. In peacetime, air raid sirens usually are activated in drills and ceremonies.
